About Carmen

Originally from Hong Kong and now based in Surrey, Carmen has developed a distinctive practice inspired by the natural beauty of the British landscape and the countryside surrounding her home. Working across a range of media, including ink, watercolour and oils, Carmen previously undertook commissioned ink sketches capturing the cityscapes and cultural life of Hong Kong. Following her move to the United Kingdom in 2020, her artistic focus increasingly turned towards landscape painting in oils, exploring light, atmosphere and a sense of place within the English countryside. Her works reflect a personal connection to the places and represent the narrative of her experience in the country. Carmen continues to develop her practice through the study of landscape with her appreciation of the natural world.
Carmen's own words
I have always loved drawing and painting since I was very young. I am the first and only member in both my paternal and maternal families who enjoys making art. Growing up in Hong Kong, I hardly imagined I could become an artist. My upbringing paved my path away from art. Still I hung on to it on the side of what seemed to be life priorities to fulfill. Deep down I always feel that drawing and painting is what I can do intuitively and truly love to do. Art has been the one constant that keeps me going through the many transitions I have experienced in life.
Since moving to the United Kingdom, I discovered my personal freedom and reconnected with my creative calling. With no formal training or artistic qualification, I have the chance to meet with and be inspired by many talented artists in the country. I feel very privileged to be given the opportunity to practise and develop my art. In turn, I hope to share my love of creating art and let the positive energy flow far and wide.
